I have added this link to our website, on the main cemetery index. At this time, I only
see Roberts Chapel listed, but perhaps more will be added later. I signed in as a guest.
I didn't read enough of the user's guide to know if I could have seen more as a
"member." P
The Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology is excited to introduce the
State Historic Architecture and Archaeology Record Database (SHAARD), our newest
public-accessible electronic database. SHAARD gives interested parties the opportunity to
access the cultural resource data the DHPA holds on historic properties and cemetery
resources across Indiana. Researchers can easily search records concerning National
Register properties, theaters, historic bridges, county surveys, and cemeteries, gaining
information on a resource's location and site characteristics, as well as viewing
photos and maps of the sites and structures without having to visit our Indianapolis
central office. SHAARD also allows us to update information the instant we hear a building
is demolished, a bridge is restored, or a cemetery is moved, giving visitors the most
recent information available.
Eventually the database will hold all the information included within the Indiana Survey
of Historic Sites and Structures, but converting over twenty-five years of paper records
for all ninety-two counties takes time. This is an ongoing initiative, but we already have
thousands of records available and are working hard to continue adding to SHAARD's
data.
With your organization's genealogical focus, SHAARD can help your website's
visitors know more about historic and active cemeteries within their county. They will
have access to all of the data collected through the DHPA's Cemetery and Burial Ground
Registry, which includes cemeteries' locations, known number of graves, general
assessment of the cemeteries' condition, ethnic/organizational affiliations, and
architectural features, as well as maps and photos.
In addition, researchers from interested groups using your site can help us expand our
knowledge too by offering any additional information on cemeteries with incomplete
profiles. By working together, we can make sure SHAARD's cemetery records and the
Cemetery and Burial Ground Registry is as complete as possible.
By having a complete cemetery records, we can work to assure that the location of graves
are always known. Some of SHAARD's users include road engineers, construction
companies, and county plan departments. When we know the location of a cemetery, so will
they.
If you feel visitors to your website would benefit from the information within SHAARD or
can expand our knowledge about your county's cemeteries, please place a link to
DHPA's SHAARD page
http://www.in.gov/dnr/historic/4505.htm on your website. Anyone
can access the cemetery records and structure records by simply clicking on "Enter
SHAARD as a guest" in the top right hand corner of the welcome page.
If you have any questions about this initiative, have information to update your
county's data on SHAARD, or would like to request a link reversal to your site, please
contact Jeannie Regan-Dinius, Cemetery and Burial Grounds Registry Coordinator at (317)
234-1268 or jrdinius(a)dnr.in.gov.
Sincerely,
Hilary Retseck
