There was a natural gas explosion on Aug 11, 1890 at and around the Ogden
(now Van Pelt) cemetery south of Waldron. Ron Hamilton wrote a column about
this in the Shelbyville News April 28, 1999, and it is described in the
Waldron Bicentennial Edition 1976 booklet called "The Waldron Story or
Conn's Creek Reflections". Hamilton's article says local people thought it
was the end of the world. It blew out part of the cemetery where it
overhangs the Flat Rock/Conns Creek rivers intersection. The explosion was
so large that news of it was carried in The New York Times the day after. .
Natural gas is common in parts of Indiana, so I understand.

So why is there a major gas line running north from Mexico straight through
Jackson Township? Sounds explosive.

Gas explosion. I've read the article numerous times, but old age is
getting the best of me and I can't remember it all now. But our closest
major faultline runs under Mt. Auburn. We would be affected if the New
Madrid Fault had another one like in 1811-1812. Memphis, St. Louis and
Evansville would be leveled. Terre Haute and Indianapolis would have major
damage, Terre Haute more than Indy. We purchased earthquake insurance
in
1988 when we built in Shelbyville, but it didn't cover anything but the
brick on the house. LC

Thanks, I wondered because the groundber had long cracks like you see in
earthquakes, heaven forbid! Would hate to know you had a big old fault
under you
there.
Go see that picture, it is something.

A build up of natural gas, I think. It is well-documented, if I am
thinking
of the right incident. The library has newspaper articles. Surely
someone
else out there can give you some real details!
