I enjoy these stories also. I remember one year I was on a research trip to
Indiana and met a distant cousin through my Waughtel line, in Columbus. I
had taken several notebooks, notes etc., so I wouldn't duplicate anything.
This distant cousin brought along her daughter and we were going through
information and I mentioned that her parents marriage "listing" showed
"license" and no recording date. She was quite "furious" to say the
least
that I thought her parents were not married and she said - THEY WERE MARRIED
- <smile> and I showed her the page I had photocopied. So here is another
case of not having a marriage actually "recorded". I have been told in many
instances "way back when" that many of the ministers were "traveling
ministers" - they would marry a couple (and/or couples) on the way to where
ever they were headed and then record the marriage on their way back (if
they still had the paperwork). And many times they did not come back
through the same area.
Another story, and although my daughter & I get a "charge" out of it, her
husband does not <lol>. They married in 1995 (his first, her second) and
when the minister filled out the papers she must have looked at the "year"
as she wrote my daughter's age as 95 - this was not noticed until a
few years later, and my daughter had to get a copy from the courthouse for
some reason or other, and the clerk noticed it and said she would change
that as she said "anyone can tell you were not 95".
