Just another idea on these early settlers. The Germans listed at the bottom
of the early settlers list all settled in Union Township. I know that
George Leiss (Zeiss) is from Kandel, Rheinpfalz, Bayern (Bavaria). I
strongly suspect after reading some of Chadwick and doing my own research
that all of these german families either (1) came from the same town/area,
or (2) met on the boat coming over. The Zeiss' came into the country
through New Orleans in about 1832. According to Chadwick's, the Theobold's,
the Becker's, and the Haehl's also came in through New Orleans around the
same time. I also know that there are Kepple/Keppel/Cappel families in
Kandel.
I plan to write to my contact about these families. I will keep you posted.
Give me a few weeks.
