My late father-in-law also remembered that summer! Mel Torme made an
impression on Shelbyvillians also.

Hello List.
As my husband was reading the Autobiography of Mel Torme' he found
Shelbyville, Indiana mentioned.
Mel Torme' made his reputation during the Big Band Era as a songwriter,
arranger, drummer, and of course a singer.
I case anyone is interested this is what is written.

My maternal grandparents had moved to a small town called
Shelbyville,
Indiana, and in the summer of 1941, I went to visit them for a few
weeks.
The
local malt-shop hangout was called "The Hut," and Harry
James's recording
of
my song was on the jukebox. I basked in the warmth of Hoosier
friendliness
and congratulations. I met a pretty girl and dated her. The summer was
sweet
and warm, and the county-fresh smells of Indiana were positively
exhilarating. I hared to return to Chicago and Hyde Park.
