And don't forget COFFEY, as in Coffey Co KS.
It never ceases to amaze me, the various ways a name can be spelled and
pronounced. Take for example, in this area, the McGAUGHEY family, they
pronounce it, MA-GAY-HE, accent on middle syllable, but it is spelled like
CAUGHEY, right? But how is your CAUGHEY pronounced, CAW-HE or CAY-HE, or
neither?
Also, don't discount the possibility that it originally might have been
McCAUGHEY or McGAUGHEY. It took me a long time for me to learn that the
first rule in tracing one's tree, is to have a VERY open mind when it comes
to spelling and sounding out the various surnames. Also, I would venture a
guess that it was most likely not the families themselves who Americanized
their name, but the census takers, court reporters, tax people, etc., who
did it, as they were most apt to be the one who was doing the writing.
