John Wesley Crum, son of Joel and Maria Crum was my great great grandfather.
When I was trying to find out more about him, I discovered that there were
quite a few unrelated (as far as I know) Indiana Crum families about and at
least another with both a John Wesley and a George Washington. Joel married
Maria (also Marie and Mariah) in 1839 in PA and both her family and Joel's
family moved to Shelby County. Joel had two brothers, William and Rufus but I
do not know if they were old enough to have a 33 year old son named Joseph.

If it is the same one, John Wesley Crum was my great-grandfather and I would
love to have a picture of him as all the family photos have been lost.

Is this a blended family somehow? Did Joseph and Hannah die and their children go to live with Joel and Maria? If so, how are Joseph and Joel related? Brothers? Or, is Joel the same person as Joseph with a new wife and new children? If this is the correct scenario does Mary belong to Hannah or Maria? There is a gap between Mary and Columbus that might make this scenario reasonable. I'd sure appreciate some help if anyone "knows" this family.
Also, I'm so excited! We will be making a trip to Shelby County in a couple of weeks to visit family and get some local genealogy work done. I have a photo a Wes (John Wesley) Crum from about 1880 if you're
interested. He was a friend of the family, no relation and it was digitized by me from
a photo album of tin types which were informally dated "around 1880". The
names were put on them by my husband's grandmother, probably in the 1950s or
1960s.
Email me directly because I'm not sure if photos go through the mailing

Kathleen,
You are welcome. Enumerators weren't perfect. In fact, there are lots of mistakes in census records. So....trust what you know. <grin>

Kathleen,
According to the bio, Joel is the son of Peter and Elizabeth (Eckelbarger) Crum of Dauphin County, PA. Joel was born May 30, 1816 in Dauphin County. At the age of 20 he moved to Juanita County where he lived for 3 years. While there, he married Maria L. Jeffries on May 30, 1839. They moved to Fayette County, Indiana. In the spring of 1842 they moved to Shelby County. Maria died on March 26, 1890 and he died August 1, 1893. They had eight children:
Jerome b. May 23, 1840 (he died at the age of 6)
Michael b. May 1, 1842; d. Sept. 26, 1890
Catherine b. Feb. 6, 1845; d. July 1896; married Bellamy S. Sutton
George Washington b. Oct. 3, 1847; d. Nov. 16, 1904
John Wesley b. Feb. 11, 1850
Mary Eliza b. July 23, 1852; became the wife of Perry Albert Graham
Columbus Oliver b. Mar. 9, 1854, deceased
Louisa Irene b. Oct. 23, 1856; married Henry Smith; died Aug. 7, 1881
My guess is that the enumerator in 1850 understood Joel to be Joe and wrote Joseph. Where they got Hannah from is beyond me. I believe that Catherine is Matilda (Matilda being her first name but they called her by her middle name). Konrad Linden might have been a hired hand who lived with them. (I got this information from Chadwick's History of Shelby County)
I hope that this is helpful.
