Where else? All over the South, that's where! And because of this Shelby
site, we can see that the same goes for Indiana.

Indiana does have mortality schedules for 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880. The
Indiana State Library has a book listing people on the schedules by name. The
Indiana State Library and the Allen County (Ind.) Library have microfilms of
the mortality schedules.
Unlike other states where the Mortality Schedules are readily available,
Indiana Schedules are only available at the 2 places listed above - although
perhaps at the National Archives in Washington, DC and/or maybe National Archives
in Chicago which serves the State of Indiana.
The mortality schedules list people who died within the one year period
preceding the census. Not everyone is listed but it is wonderful information when
you find an ancestor.
Kathy
Good Morning,
I appreciate your thoughtfulness in checking Bartholomew Co. for me. Thanks
for thinking outside the box!

Good morning Connie:
Just on the chance that your people had strayed south across the line into
Bartholomew County, I checked my set of reference books on Bartholomew
County marriages. Amazingly, there were NO persons surnamed either Maple or
Tustin in this set of books.
My ancestors couldn't resist the temptation to meander back and forth
between Shelby and Bartholomew Counties, so I often have to check both
places!
Good luck -- and sorry I couldn't help.

I'm looking for the marriage of Lydia Maple born between 1812 and 1820 in PA and possibly married in Shelby Co., IN. Her father, William Maple, died in Shelby Co. in 1834 and her mother Lydia (Tustin) Maple died in Shelbyville on 6 Dec 1850. Am actually trying to find Lydia Senior in the 1850 census and thought I'd see if she's with her daughter.
Another question, does Indiana have a mortality schedule for 1850?
Thanks,

I think it is called HOOSIER HOSPITALITY. I travel for my job all over the
country and being a former Shelbyvillian, I can truly say "There's no place
like home... there's no place like home".
This country has a lot of nice people but Hoosiers go out of their way to
make strangers feel at home. Where else does everybody you pass on a country
road wave to strangers as you go past?

The other night I was chatting on a website with a lifelong friend who now
lives far from Shelby County as I do, and someone asked if we were related.
I
said no, but we've been friends all our lives, our parents grew up
together,
and our grandparents were friends also. Everyone was so taken aback that
such relationships still exist and commented how wonderful that was. Then
they
wanted to know WHERE that great place must be. Kudos to the heartland once
again, especially to Shelby County.
Just one more interesting little story. When my paternal grandmother died
back in the 40s, one of the cards of condolence received was from a woman
in
Cincinnati. Apparently no one knew who she was until they read her note.
She
and her family had been travelling from somewhere up north back home and
their car broke down on 52 in Gwynneville. It was summer, and they were
all hot
and tired, not to mention frustrated with their situation while awaiting
repairs to get back on the road. Noticing this car full of rambunctious
children and distraught parents, Grandma took tea, lemonade, and sandwiches
out to
them and had an impromptu picnic on the front lawn while the work was
completed. This woman never forgot that kindness and somehow learned of
Grandma's
death a few years later.
That's the kind of place Shelby County is, and that shows you why this is
without doubt the best County website---the people. Everyone should be so
lucky to have had ancestors who lived in Shelby County, Indiana.

I have to agree. Everytime I have needed help, the researchers go all out
to help and come up with the answers and even explanations and suggestions.
Great site!!! I wish all the sites were more like this one. Keep up the good
work..

I have to jump in here and comment on the site. I have never experienced a more enthusiastic, helpful group of people on any county site. The volunteers here are ready and willing to go the extra mile to assist researchers. They make genealogy so much fun! Three cheers for Shelby!

Hello Shelby site,
I have only good to say about this site and all the help I have been given
from Phyllis and Barb Huff and several others who only work to help us on our
family research. I could not have all the information that I have gained if
it had not been for them.
A big thanks to all who maintain this site.
Jean in Michigan
I will mirror Cathy's sentiments: the Shelby County, Indiana is by far the
best web-site on rootsweb (or others) -- and I do research in several
states. The Bartholomew County web-site is also good, but not yet on a par
with Shelby County. And nothing in other states is even close to these two.
Thanks Phyllis (Shelby County) and Kelly (Bartholomew County).

Cathy,
Thanks for the complaint!
All of the volunteers have worked really hard to make research frustrating for all after visiting the Shelby County site. [wink]
