Hi Andy,
I was doing some searching in Clermont, IN and found that where some of our lineage came from Shelby Co. We are not related, but I photographed Clermont Cemetery and there are lots of Applegates/Applegets in there. And also on the 1880 census for Marion Co. Maybe that can help you in some way. Trish

Am not searching this line, just trying to help. How sure are you of her birthdate? In the 1900 census for Shelby county, Hanover township, Dist 110, sheet 2A or page 3, there was a family headed by Alexander West, 44, born Sep 1855, married 13 years, a laborer in a saw mill, born in Ind and both parents in Ky. Included in the family were his wife Samantha, 38, Mar 1862, married 13 years, mother of 5 of which 4 were still living, born in Ind and both parents in Ohio, - his daughter Annie (your Anna?), 13, May 1887, Ind, at school, - his daughter Nellie, 11, Jul 1888, Ind, at school, - his daughter Lavina, 8, Sep 1891, Ind, at school, - his son Scott, 5, May 1895, Ind, and his mother-in-law Ann Gard, 76, Feb 1824, widowed, mother of 9 of which 6 were still living, born in Ohio as were both parents. Alexander West married Samantha Gard in Shelby county on 22 May 1886, source is book 13, page 44. Hope this helps. Don

I'm looking for the parents of Anna West born May 20, 1886 Shelby County Indiana died June 15, 1944 Henry County Indiana. I was told it was Walter West and Prudence Smith, but when Anna died her mother was still alive in her obits as Samatha West near Gwynnville If anybody has any information please get in touch with me. I have been looking along time. Anna married Dora R. Leisure Dec. 24, 1905 Shelby County Indiana. Thanks Mariah Allen
I would use it as an "about" date, with the source citation, pending
better data. Who's to know whether the person(s) planning the
celebratiion knew the exact date or even whether the party was really ON
the date, or just a convenient time to celebrate?

How much clout would this carry as a record of a birth date?
When my grandmother went to get her birth certificate in order to get a
passport (around 1970) she discovered the records had been lost in a fire. She
had to fill out an affadavit stating that to the best of her knowledge she was
born in 1898 or 99 and the only proof she had that this was even close was
her high school graduation date. The state accepted it and issued her a birth
certificate. I suppose they might have consulted census records if
necessary, but they didn't. Or even baptismal records, but they didn't do that
either. If it's good enough for the government...........
