Guess it's growing. I haven't been there for a few years. I was up on 40 a
couple of weeks ago and it seems as if Indpls. goes for ever. German Church
Rpad used to be waaaaay out in the country. You will have to concede thought
that Gwynneville is still little more than a wide space in the road. <g> In
fact it has been steadily shrinking. Almost all the houses around ours are
gone now.

I can give you a little info on New Palestine, Hancock Co, IN as that is
where I live. We're a little more than a wide space in the road anymore. Folks
are moving out of Indpls. in droves for the "good life" so farm land is
disappearing fast. The towns going east from NP on US 52 are Carollton/Finly,
Fountaintown, Morristown, then Gwynnville.
Burial listings for the New Palestine cemetery are at the Greenfield Public
Library. Greenfield is the county seat.

Is this Cemetery in Indiana? If so it's probably New Palastine, another wide
space in the road on US 52. It's closer to Indianapolis than Gwynneville,
Morristown, and Fountaintown. It think NP is the next town on the way to
Indpls. Could be Carollton is between it and Fountaintown and NP. I believe NP is
in Hancock County.

This spelling is not correct. It is now and always has been Gwynneville.
Named after O'Brien Gwynne.
That frame church was later moved into town and located on a corner lot where
the present church stands. About 1911 a new church was built of brick on the
corner and the old church was moved north a hundred feet or so, but still on
the church's land.
It's all the same organization. There's a picture of the brick church on the
Shelby site. I have a picture of the old wooden church if you want it.
Many Christian Churches belong to the Disciples of Christ (a federation of
Christian Churches) but I don't believe Gwynneville ever did. It may have, but
it definitely pulled out if it did.
The Disciples of Christ is colocated at the Downey Avenue Christian Church in
Indianapolis (Irvington area). It's the organization from which Jim Jones
came.

I am thinking that this church is the same as Gynneville Christian Church. Does anyone think different?
This church [Christian Center] is located near Gwynneville, in Hanover Township. This society was first organized at Beech Grove, probably as early as 1850, by the Rev. James Conner. Active in the organization were the Darmers, Swains, Pollitts, McConnells, Wests, Bogues, Alexanders and Rigbees…In 1870 a frame church costing one thousand five hundred dollars, was erected on a lot donated by Mr. Gwynne. This is located three-fourths of a mile east of town. The present membership is about forty. The officers are: John Alexander, Benjamin Duncan, Alfred Pollitt, George Hayes and J. R. Harris, trustees; J. W. Alexander and Hamilton Watson, deacons.

Thanks Jill, I did mean Hanover. It is very possible that Salathiel Hays is buried in Rush County--I'll keep looking. We are thinking that the Jess Tucker in the picture is our line because he was there with our Hays' but I haven't proved it for fact yet.

There were Tuckers at the church in the 1950s. I remember in particular Jess Tucker. He is in the picture on the Shelby website of the men of Gwynneville Christian Church.

Kristin there is no cemetery in Gwynneville, never has been. Most people from there are buried at Asbury or Hanover. Strolling through Asbury is like taking a walk back in the history of Gwynneville.
There is no Salathiel Hayes listed in the Shelby Burial Index book. Gwynneville is so close to the Rush County line perhaps he's there.
There's a cemetery on US 52 just before you get to Arlington on the north side of the road. Maybe 2 miles from Gwynneville.
There are also cemeteries in Carthage. Best to look at a map to get there. There's a country road that goes north only in the middle of Arlington. It runs right into Carthage. Other ways to get there too, but more complicated.

John is the lady's name Nettie Waggoner? I've not been able to think of anyone else who lives across from the church. If not, would you be so kind as to tell me her name. I'm from Gwynneville and have been back frequently recently, and most of the houses have been torn down.

Thanks for the info, John, I'm hoping to get back to the area by the end of the year. I missed a couple pictures at Asbury and I'd like to look at the cemetery in Gynneville--I still haven't given up on finding Salathiel Hays' grave.

Barbara. All of the Lee's you mentioned are members of my Lee family. Are
you a descendant? If so, I would like to talk to you. Thanks for putting that
on the site, even though I had the information. I just can't get any Lee's
to reply.

I am looking for someone who lives near the German Cemetery near Blue Ridge
that is willing to go take pictures of the tombstones for my relatives that are
buried there. I will send a disposable camera to you and a mailer to send it
back to me. Thank you.
