EMMERT
by Phyllis Miller Fleming
I meant to send this with the Shelby Roots notice. Sorry for the extra post!
"A while ago" Bob Gordon sent me pictures of Judge Emmert and his family. The second page of pictures shows the guns he loved. Barb Huff contributed an obituary to go with the pictures.

I became interested in Judge Emmert because of the following story.
A friend of mine flew to FL last Christmas. She sat next to a woman from Grant Co IN, and they started talking. When the woman heard my friend was from Shelbyville IN, she told the following story. Her name is Tinka, as is her mother's name. Her mother was given this distinct name by her mother, who had once seen a picture of a young girl named Tinka in the Shelbyville newspaper. She was unmarried at the time, but vowed that if married and if blessed with a daughter, she would name her Tinka. And she did! And her daughter named her daughter Tinka.
My friend, knowing my passion for family history, asked me to see what I could find out about this story. With Bob and Barb's help, I did find some information. Looks like the original Tinka was only a nickname for Catherine. I had trouble reaching the Grant Co Tinka by email, so I asked my mother, who lives in Grant Co, for some help. It turns out my mother had Tinka (1) as a teacher in school and now does her banking business with Tinka (2)! Small world.
I hear Judge Emmert was a real character!
