Hannah Degolyer was my gggreatmother. Her birth name was Hannah Levi, reportedly a member
of the first Jewish family to make it to Indiana. She married Jeremiah Burchfield,
divorced him and then married an older James De Golier. In my ggrandfather's obit, it
says he was the youngest of 10 children. So many times you'll see Hannah Burchfield
married James De Golier but not Hannah Levi. Hannah's family line goes back to Isaac
Levi who was born around 1849 in Hungary. He fought in the American Revolutionary War and
lived to be over 100 years old. He died in 1850 in Ripley County. On the 1850 census
there is a hand written note that says Isaac came to America in 1758. Isaac's
grandson, Lyle Skeen Levi was hanged in Ripley County. You can find the article in the
New York Times dated 16 Sept 1897. He had been a couterfieter and had been in prison for
at least 10 years or two different times. He was on two census records (1870, 1880) in
the Indiana State Prison. Lyle's!
sister Missouri married a Rittenhouse who also ran in the wrong crowd. The Levis have
an interesting family history.
As far as the DeGolier family goes, check into the History of Ohio and New York. This is
the DeGolier family that many say trace back to France 1725. The original DeGolier was a
soldier of fortune who came first to Canada and then down through New York. Some of his
family moved to Ohio and then some of them moved to Indiana, mostly Ripley County. The
last named Degolyer in my family is my paternal grandmother who was born in Ripley County
but moved the Shelby County after getting married to my grandfather. Good luck in your
search. I hope this gives you some additional clues.
