We were told about the cemetery by one of the locals when we visited the area about 15
years ago to see an old family honestead on the outskirts of Cross Plains. I was never
told what the name of the cemetery was, only that it was an old German cemetery. The old
house that we visited was near the border of Switzerland and Ripley counties, so I'm
not even sure which county it is in. The only directions I have now is that it was up the
hill on Iceburg Road. We were only able to drive part of the way. Once we got to the
area where a creek bed actually went over the road, we had to walk the rest of the way.
We almost gave up thinking we were on the wrong track when we finally found it. There was
a small iron gate with no name, and probably 20 to 30 graves (inscribed on old German).
The family I am researching is Hemesath, and there was a grave for Caroline Hemesath
there. Since visiting there, I have also discovered that other surnames in their family
are Steffen and No!
esekabel. I would be interested to know if there are any other graves with these names.
At the time we were there I did not expect to be walking a cemetery and had not taken
anything to jot down info on. I do have a couple of pictures if you think that might help
you. I recently tried Google Earth to see if I could find the cemetery, but had no luck
(although I did see Iceburg Road). I know this is not much to go on, but if you can shed
any light on this it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
