These two Campbell histories are in the section of the History Book submitted by members
of families. It is printed at the bottom of page 183 and ends at the top of page 184.
This one is quite short. It states
Campbell and McClure
James Campbell was born in 1789 in Kentucky and died June 11, 1829 in Ripley Co.,
Indiana. He married on August 9, 1809 in Mason County, Kentucky - Sarah McClure born June
6, 1785 in Kentucky who died January 15, 1863 in Ripley County, Indiana. The moved first
to Jefferson County then to Ripley County, Indiana about 1816. Children were Nancy
Evaline, James Orville, Sarah Ann, Elizabeth Jane who married John Cooper, William Oliver,
Alfred, Clarissa, Amanda, Milford C., and Frances Marion. John and Elizabeth Jane
Campbell Cooper were the author's great-great-grandparents.
James Campbell's parents were James Campbell and Sarah McClure of Mason County,
Kentucky. Sarah McClure's parents were Frances McClure and Sarah McClure of Mason
County, Kentucky.
Sarah McClure Campbell lived in Shelby Township in Ripley County, Indiana at the time
of the 1849 and 1850 census records, and farmed. I wish more could be learned about these

Campbell Family
James Madison Campbell was the oldest child of Elizabeth Cox and William Campbell.
Both were born in Kentucky, Elizabeth in 1803 and William in 1800. The children children
came from Virginia, then to southern Indiana.
Children, James Madison Campbell born 24 December 1820; Jane Campbell Risk Dalgleash
born circa 1822, John W. Campbell born circa 1823, Susan Campbell Higbie born 1825; Mary
Campbell Kelly born circa 1828; Cynthia Ann Campbell Ward, born 10 May 1829; Margaret
Campbell born 1832; Harriet Campbell Back born circa 1835; William Campbell born circa
1836; Indiana Campbell Readington born circa 1838; Elizabeth Campbell Horton born 11 March
1841; Amanda Campbell Paugh born 25 September 1843; Sarah F. Campbell Harwood born circa
1846; Lucinda Campbell born 13 June 1848.
James M. Campbell lived in Ripley County, Brown Township most of his life. According
to census records he was a farmer. Oral family history says that he was a preacher. On
26 December 1844, Ripley County, Indiana, James M. Campbell married Susannah Buchanan,
widow of Andrew C. Risk. She was the daughter of Wilson Buchanan (1775 - 1851) and Hannah
Ricketts (1790 - 1853). Both her grandparents, George Buchanan and Robert Ricketts,
served in the Revolutionary War. Susannah had five children when she married James M.
Campbell; Hannah, John W., Emily, James M., and Amanda Risk.
From the Toph papers, written by Thomas E. Risk, "I was 7,8, 9 years old when my
father's health failed him, a tubercular trouble contracted in the War of '61 and
he lost his little farm and moved to his mother's farm, where my grandmother was born.
Her first husband was a Risk. He died when my father was a small boy. She married James
M. Campbell. My fathers name was James M. Risk, Campbell being his step-father. I grew to
know my grandfather whom I think was a very fine man."
James M. Campbell and Susannah Buchanan had three children; Robert Miles Campbell
1845-1927, Lucinda Campbell died at an early age, buried in Risk Cemetery, Silas A.S.
Campbell born 6 August 1853.
In the Civil War Robert M. Campbell was a paid substitute for Thomas Ralston. He
served for the Union as a teamster in Co. G 35th reg. His half-brother James Madison Risk
also was a teamster in the regiment. His brother, Smith Campbell, was a Confederate. No
one knows what happened to him.
Robert M. Campbell married Sarah Frances Witham 12 June 1864.
Children: James William Campbell called "Billy" or "Friday"
1865-1925; Albert Burney Campbell 1867-1933; Kirby Smith Campbell 1870-1872; Eliza
Rosana "Rosie" Campbell Copeland 1872-1959; Nellie Susan Campbell Lemen
1875-1952.
He second married Mary Jane Cates.
Children: David Elby Campbell 1893 - still living, Fountain County, Indiana; Lena
Ellen Campbell Biscketer 1905-1971; Robert Glenn Campbell 1899-1937.
I am the daughter of Robert Glenn Campbell and Fredia Jarred. I would like to hear
