I lived there from 1968 until 1974 and my parents lived there a few years beyond that. I
don't know off the top of my head when it was torn down but it was some years after my
parents moved out and sold. I think it was built in 1881 by a Dr. Freeman and I don't
know for sure if it made it to be 100 years old or not. There was stained glass in some of
the windows and massive intricate wood doors and trim. Some of that ended up at a local
restaurant in town and I believe the restaurant and the articles are still there. The
address of the house was 115 S. Buckeye and it was on the west side of US421 a half block
south of the intersection with Ripley Street (the brick street) and next door to the old
post office. Freeman's Store was around the corner on Ripley Street and I think this
was related to the Freeman of which we speak.
The house had steam heat with a gas-fired boiler that we converted from coal-fired in
1968-1969 and there was still a coal chute to offload coal into the basement from the
street level. I think it had 12' ceilings downstairs and 10' ceilings upstairs and
it had a large partially finished attic with three framed rooms. It also had a large
basement with rooms and some crawl space. My room was room 10 upstairs and we all had our
own bathroom in each bedroom. We still had the room keys with the old-fashioned key fob
attached that said Hotel Freeman on them. The front porch wrapped around and had an
integrated gazebo on the corner and there was a small balcony above. I could go on more
about it but enough for now.
