I am new to this list. I'm hoping that I can connect
with someone else who is researching the RANEY family.
My g-g-grandfather was ANDREW JACKSON RANEY, b.
RIPLEY CO, 1817. He married MARGARET SEAVER in RIPLEY
in 1845. Two of their children were born in
Indiana-Rachel, b. 1847, Solomon, b. 1845.
I believe that Andrew's father was JACOB RANEY,
b.1770, wife RACHEL, b. 1775, VA.
I do not have access to the Indiana census records. I
do know that ANDREW and MARGARET were not living in
Ripley in 1850, but were somewhere in Indiana. They
were living in GALLATIN COUNTY, KY in 1860.
I would really appreciate a lookup in the 1850 Indiana
census index for Andrew and Rachel, so that I could
know their location.
I would also like to know if anyone else is
researching this family.

Rod,
What Davis people are you looking for? I am
searching for Oliver H Perry
DAVIS and any of his family. He was born 8 May 1824
in Ripley Co, IN. By
1860 he was married and living in Caldwell Co, MO.
Any connection?
Possibility that some of his brothers lived there
also,
Thanks for any help,
Becky

Can someone tell me who Oliver Perry was? I feel
dumb asking but I have
found so many people from that time frame who named
their kids after him. I
have a James Perry Drake and have seen others named
Oliver Perry ..... I
think that if we (OK I) knew who the original Oliver
Perry was, it might be
a clue to finding those ancestors who were named
after him. So far, I have
found his name sakes all with a connection to south
east Indiana. Can
someone enlighten me on this? Thanks.

Oliver H. Perry defeated the British fleet at the
Battle of Lake Erie, 1813,
and won the Battle of the Thames, Ontario, later the
same year (both during
the War of 1812). I don't know his origins, but I
have seen many namesakes
outside the SE Indiana region.

A web site with Oliver Hazard Perry's picture and a
brief bio is at
http://www.brigniagara.org/perry.htm
Born in Rhode Island, 1785; died at sea near
Trinidad, of Yellow fever,
1819.
Indiana governor Oliver Hazard Perry Morton would be
a namesake, natch; and
then in my family I find Oliver Perry Morton
Ashe......
