Another xerox copy is titled by hand: Mangum Star, May 24, 1906:
"In Memory of G. F. Mayer
The death of Grandpa Mayer occurred on May 19, 1906, at 4 o'clock p.m. at his home in
Chalk Bluff Community. He got up last Wednesday feeling bad, came down to Willow and got
some medicine, but kept getting worse until God relieved him from his sufferings and
called him home. He was born in Germany in 1828, embraced Christ in 1851, was married to
Miss C. L. Putnam in 1852. He was the father of twelve children, seven of whom have gone
on before. He leaves a broken-hearted companion, and five children, all of whom are
married. They are: Mrs. Noah Harris of Willow, Mrs. Gardner Rose of the Ozone Community,
Mr. Art Mayer who resides on his farm here, a daughter who resides in Texas and a host of
friends. But we do not mourn as those who have no hope for though he has gone and cannot
come back we now thank our Heavenly Father that we know where to find him. He called his
wife to his bedside and said, "I cannot live much longer but I feel that God is with
us. Death is sure, life i!
s forever." He was laid to rest in the Willow Cemetery. Services were conducted by
Bro. Edwards of Granite, (OK). After this we looked on his face for the last time.
'In a little country graveyard, There is now a new turned mound;
And the form of him we cherished, Has been laid beneath the ground.
But up yonder in the portals, That are shining O so fair;
Grandpa will be sheltered, By a Savior's tender care.
And if we will hold out faithful, Till life's journey here is o'er;
We will be with him forever, On that happy peaceful shore.' -- A Friend.
*1900 CENSUS of Greer County, OK says GFM left Germany for USA at the age of 22.
A Mayer Family Journal, written by Caroline and in the possession of Mrs Pat Blankenship,
states that upon arrival in the US GFM was met and befriended by an old German couple who
helped him learn English and taught him the cobbler's trade. He became a Missionary
Baptist preacher and traveled by covered wagon from NY to OK preaching the Good News of
the Gospel.
