Dear Fran,
Thanks for the speedy reply! Are your Palmers the ones who came to the New England area
of America in the 1600's? I noticed those Palmers have multiple Sylvanus Palmers in
their line, too, and I have always wondered if my and those Palmers were related. My
James Sylvanus Palmer, who went by "Sylvanus", had a cousin who was named
Sylvanus Palmer.
Sylvanus was not the most common name as you know, and my Palmers were also English but
lived for a bit in Northern Ireland like many English did from the 1600's on, with
many ultimately coming to America. Mine were Protestant Baptist who lived in Center and
Franklin Townships of Ripley County, and other areas nearby (Dearborn and Rush counties,
too).
The two brothers - Blaney and John - arrived together from Londonderry, NI, to
Philadelphia, PA, in 1843, making their way to Indiana finally by 1850, as noted in the
census. They both "picked up a wife" along the way in Butler, OH, before
arriving in Indiana. There are still many Palmer descendants in this same area today.
Do you know what part of England your Palmers originate from - not just the port they
left, but where the family actually lived for some years before emigrating to the USA? My
line may actually be a branch of your Palmer line.
I look forward to hearing from you again,
Sherri Miller
