The reported burial site of this soldier was "near Osgood" Ripley
County, Indiana. Osgood is in the "Center Township" of Ripley County. We
searched our Cemetery Listings for the cemeteries of Center Township.
Ewing Family Cemeteries 1 & 2. These are located on State Route #350
north and east of Osgood. In Cemetery 2, we found two Levi burials, the
first was c/o Eli , but the second stone was badly weathered.
Greendale Cemetery: 1/2 mile east of Osgood, we find Lyle S. Levi, died
1897, age 65 years, Company F. Indiana Infantry. "One of several men
hanged ata Versailles in 1897 (Versailles is the county seat of Ripley
County.) A search of the Ripley County Circuit Court Books should reveal
the reason for the hanging.
Perseverence Cemetery: is located one mile east of Osgood and has two
Levi graves with tombstones.
1. Maggie Levi 1855-1930
2. Maggie O. Levi b. 14 June 1899 d. 26 May 1920
Note: It should be remembered that most of the cemetery listings that
have been done anywhere are actually the tombstone listings in those
cemeteries. Without a doubt many tombstones have fallen down and are
buried underneath sod, or were stolen, or are so weathered as to defy
reading them, especialy the early marble stones.
To find other family members a check of the County Records should be
made, i.e. Will Books, Probate Court Record Books (if the person died
intestate) and Court Order and Court Minute Books.
The Census records should also be checked, and as the Levi families
lived in Center Township, it should not be too difficult to search it
page by page, and you will find them. If we find any additional Levi
data we will post it on this web site. Al and Margaret
