In searching the family of Allen Carnine, I discovered belatedly that the surname for this
family is Carnine not Carmine. This is not immediately apparent to anyone who reads only
the records for Allen Carnine (Carmine) in Iowa & Indiana. When I saw Carnine in the
1880 IA census, I assumed it was a mistake, since all the other census & marriage
citations had been Carmine. I should have learned early on that you must make no
assumptions in genealogy. However, the charts at
familysearch.org do not make clear the
wild & unexpected permutations the Carnine surname has gone through. Tracing it
backwards, it goes something like: Carnine, Carmine, with Canine & Cavine along the
way, back to Conine, Conyn & Konyn. Who could have imagined the evolution of this
name?! Does a Dutch or New Jersey accent account for this?
For those wishing to trace the Allen Carnine (Carmine) family, please see:

or just go to
familysearch.org & enter Allen Carnine. That site says the documentation
is found on Compact Disc #46.
I do think IMHO that when referring to Allen Carnine he should be called Allen Carnine
(Carmine), since so many references to him are under that name.
The granddaddy (or grandmother, since it's by a woman) record of the Carnine family
(& the probable source for the
familysearch.org material) seems to be: Evelyn A.
North, "A Record of the Family of Andrew Carnine (or Conine) of Harrodsburg,
Kentucky, Son of Dirck Conyn of Boundbrook, New Jersey" (1947). It can be found at:
http://www.carnine.com/Docs/Carnine Record Rev1.pdf.
For the McCarty ancestors of Allen Carnine's wife, Lydia A. McCarty, please see:

I am trying to find out who Allen Carnine (Carmine)'s dau. Mary Jane Carnine (Carmine)
b c 1835/6 IL/IA married.
Actually, I am trying to find out the maiden name of my greatgrandmother Mary (Carman?)
Rowcroft Smith, b Jul 1837 IL/OH, who m. (1) Isaac Rowcroft (31 May 1834 Stockport,
Cheshire, Eng; d by 1867 Miamo Co, KS) & (2) Samuel Smith (11 Mar 1830 Stockport,
Cheshire, Eng; 16 May 1900 Osawatomie, Miami, KS) Mary appeared in the 1860 Lykins (Miami)
Co, KS census as wife of Isaac Rowcroft. He appeared in the 1856 IA census in Washington
Twp, Des Moines Co. There are Carmans, Carmeans & Carnines in Des Moines Co at that
same time. My only lead is "Carman" written in my baby book. That could be
specific or not, but it's my only lead.
All blessings on your continued searches.
