Message Board Post:
Hello,
From what I can tell online, there is an American Legion Post (#267)
in Osgood that is named after a W. Gilland from Osgood who died in WWI.
I am in posession of a WWI diary that mentions Lt. Gilland several times in entries that
date from the week that Gilland was killed in action in France.
The author mentions being on the front lines with him pretty much on the day that Gilland
died (Oct. 9th according to records available online).
The author ended up in a field hospital by October 12th. The name of the author of the
diary is V.E. Hodges. I can find no record of him, despite lots of clues (he came through
camp Dodge, was a 2nd Lt. in the 350th Infantry, sailed to England on the HMS Delta,
etc.).
Is there anybody in the Osgood area, perhaps associated with the American Legion Post, who
cares about this sort of thing? I intend to transcribe it (the handwriting is difficult to
read); I thought that if there was anyone in the Osgood area associated with the story of
W. Gilland, they might like to have the diary...
