Don,
Thank you for helping me search. I to was even open to the Idea that Mary was a family
member staying in the household of Samuel Caplinger. But as you can see below she stayed
for quit some time. She is listed with Samuel Caplinger in the 1850 & 1860 Census.
1850 Ripley County, Shelby Twp., IN 350\353
Caplinger, Samuel 59 VA Carpenter
Caplinger, Mary 46 NC<<<
Caplinger, Fielding 20 IN Laborer
Caplinger, Jacob 18 IN Laborer
Caplinger, Adam 15 IN Laborer
Caplinger, Samuel 13 IN
Caplinger, William H. 11 IN
Caplinger, Sarah F. 8 IN
Caplinger, Francis M. 4 IN
1860, Ripley County, Johnson Twp., Versailles, IN 249/249
Caplinger, Samuel 70 KY Farmer P100
Caplinger, Mary 58 KY<<<
Caplinger, Adam 24 KY
Caplinger, Jacob 28 KY
Caplinger, Samuel 23 KY
Caplinger, William 20 KY
Caplinger, Sarah 18 KY
Caplinger, Francis 14 KY
Then in the 1870 Census she is listed with Sarah Frances Caplinger Lutes, whom I thought
to be the Daughter of Samuel Caplinger and Mary Unknown.???
1870 Ripley County, Johnson Twp., Versailles, IN 240\242
Luds, Samuel 33 IN Farm Laborer
Luds, Sarah 26 IN Keeping House
Luds, James 6 IN
Luds, Jacob 9\12 IN
Caplinger Mary 62 VA<<<
This one has really gotten me stumped. One would think that since it looks like Samuel
stayed most of his life in Ripley County, there would be a marriage record for the
marriage.
In alot of the later Census the Children of Samuel list birth place of mother as NC, which
also leads me toward Mary being Samuel's wife, since Mary also list herself as born
NC. My understanding is that Jane Ryker was born in KY.
On the other hand this Samuel might not even be the one who first Married Jane Ryker, but
if not where died Samuel go? And who would this Samuel be?
If you come up with anything else please let me know.
Thanks,
Deena
