Hi Jo:
Here's what I found:
There was an obituary notice published in the Winchester paper - April 1873
"Dr. Samuel McClure, an old and highly respected citizen died near this city
on Monday last of cancer. The doctor had been suffering for many months.
The funeral services were held at the M.E. Church with Rev. R. D. Spellman
officiating. The remains were interred in the cemetery with honors of
Masonary. He was a private in the 37th Indiana Regiment and then studied
medicine at the Medical Institute of Nashville, Tennessee."
Further records show that he was born on April 6, 1820 in Darke County, Ohio
and died on April 14,1873 in Randolph County, Indiana. He married Mary E.
Davidson born January
22, 1824 Darke County, Ohio, died October 22, 1893 in Randolph County,
Indiana, on June 1, 1849 in Darke County, Ohio. Both are buried at Fountain
Park Cemetery, Winchester, Randolph County, Indiana.
He was on the 1850 Federal census living in Jefferson, Preble County, Ohio,
married to Mary and with one child, Virginia born in 1850.
His Civil War record reads that he lived in Westport, Indiana, at the time
of his induction which was October 18, 1861. He entered the war as a
private and on November 18, 1862 he was promoted to full assistant surgeon.
He was mustered out on February 15, 1864. He served in Company H of the
37th Indiana Infantry.
Found a marriage record for his son Elbert as follows:
Elbert L. McClure son of Samuel M. McClure and Mary Davidson who was born in
Bartholomew County, Indiana about 1860 married Mary Leota Dougan born in
Richmond, Indiana, in 1866,
daughter of I. G. Dougan and Martha E. Taylor. They were married on
September 26, 1889 in Lincoln Precinct, Jefferson County, Nebraska.
They appear on the 1910 and 1920 Federal census in Jefferson County,
Missouri. Mary is listed as Leota born 1868 Indiana. They have the
following children: Helen D. born 1895 Kansas, A. Ralph born 1898 Missouri
and Ernest L. born 1900 Missouri.
WWI Draft Registration records and Social Security Death Index Records show:
Ernest L. McClure born May 22, 1899, Kansas City, Jefferson County,
Missouri.
In 1918 he was living with his father at 3418 Coleman, Kansas City,
Missouri, and
working at Bethlehem Steel Company. His brother, Ralph Adam McClure was
born
on August 27, 1897 in Kansas City, Jefferson County, Missouri, and was
living with
his father at the same address and working at Bethlehem Steel Company as
well.
Ernest L. McClure died in July of 1970 in Kansas City, Jefferson Co.,
Missouri
Ralph Adam McClure died in February of 1982 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co.,
CA
I have several McClure's in my data base but could not tie Samuel to any of
them.
Do you happen to know who his parents were?
Hope this helps.
