I am connected to the family of Reuben Shaw through my Smith family line. He married
Rebecca P. Smith who is my 2nd greaat grand aunt. He wrote the book "Across the
Plains in 49". It was about his journey to cash in on the California gold rush.

Farmland, IN
REUBEN C. SHAW, who was stricken with paralysis at his home one and one-half miles north
of Farmland, last Wednesday, is dead. Mr. Shaw was born in Boston, Mass., March 14, 1826.
His father died young. When he was young Reuben became a carpenter, learning also the
higher branches of architectural drawing and designing.
In 1847 he united in marriage to Miss Rebecca P. Smith, who was born on Cape Cod.
Mr. Shaw started across the plains to California in 1849, where he spent some time in
mining. In 1852 he started homeward, making the entire journey by water, and surviving the
perils of Cape Horn, reached his home in safety and resumed his former occupation.
In 1855 he started for the west with his wife and oldest son. He located a mile north of
Farmland, then a very unpretentious village. His course was ever forward and his property
began to accumulate, and he leaves quite an estate. Mr. Shaw was well respected and among
the best known citizens of this county.
