90th Anniversary Is Observed By Mrs. F. Chamness
Mrs. Florence Chamness, well-known retired school teacher of Union
City, observed her ninetieth birthday anniversary Wednesday at her home
at 636 West Oak street. She spent the day quietly with her daughter,
Mrs. Herbert Guy, of Harriman, Tennessee, and Mr. and Mrs. Mark C.
Taylor and family of Greensburg, Ind., as dinner guests.
The honored lady received many lovely gifts and greeting cards from
relatives, friends and former pupils. Her only living brother, Harvey
Moist of this city, who celebrated his ninety-fifth birthday anniversary
in May, called to extend his felicitations.
Mrs. Chamness was the daughter of Solomon and Catherine
[Shellenberger]Moist and was born in Center County, Penn. At the age of
two years she came with her family to Ohio and at the age of four moved
to the Union City community where she lived practically the remainder of
her life.
She graduated from the Indiana State Normal at Terre Haute, attended
a term at Indiana university at Bloomington, and spent a year at the
Chicago university. Mrs. Chamness was a teacher for 37 years and the
schools she served included Wayne township, Spartanburg, Middletown and
Union City West Side. Her long list of pupils included many well-known
business people over a wide area.
In conversation with Mrs. Chamness Wednesday afternoon she stated
that she was enjoying her birthday observation very much but regretted
that her twin granddaughters, Frances Marian and Jessica Marie, could
not be with her. The seven-year old twins are the only children of her
daughter and son-in-law.
