Which two presidential candidates came to Randolph County, Indiana to
campaign. They both came in October of those election years just 2 or 3
weeks before. One came for the day and the other did a whistle stop train
tour that day but Winchester it said in the paper was the only stop that day
in the light that the candidate left the train. He was given a ride in a
car from the train and around the court house square ending up at Washington
and Main Streets and gave his speech. This would be near the Soldier and
Sailor Monument. One wore glasses but the other did not. One served two
terms and the other only one. One was born in Ohio, and the other in New
York. Both were Republicans. One was shot while campaigning but not while
visiting here in Randolph County, and at the time he was campaigning for
someone else.
Who are they and when did they come here? Andrea
Our US Presidents who traveled here to Randolph County were Theodore
Roosevelt our 26th US President and William Howard Taft who proceeded him as
the 27th.
Roosevelt became president when President William McKinley was assassinated
in 1901.
Roosevelt came in October of 1900 to campaign. But he was then campaigning
as Vice President. McKinley and Roosevelt ticket won over William Jennings
Bryan just a few weeks later.
William Howard Taft was here in October of 1911 on a reelection campaign
bid. He did not win his second bid for Presidency. Andrea
