Thanks for the info! Yes, a gazetteer would be great. I did hear back from the Randolph
Co. Historical Society and they said tax lists from the period were destroyed. So
I'll have to look into alternate resources. Wills would be tricky because I don't
have the name of any of Mary Braden Bromagen's siblings and trying to pin down a woman
through her father's will isn't always a reliable source. I'm also not
confident that her parents were settled in the area long enough for her father to have
died there, if he hadn't died earlier somewhere else. Same thing for land records, I
was hoping that through tax information I could pin down some possible fathers for her
through mortgage lists, personal property lists, lists of landholders, etc. since that
opens up more doors than land records relating to landowners only, especially considering
the giant question mark over whether or not her parents were actually living there.
Looking for other Braden marriage records that occurred in Randolph Co is a great idea
though. I think I'll see what I can find that way. That could lead me to siblings
who could then lead me to parents. Also checking into the possibility that she was placed
in a guardianship through the courts is another possibility.
Thanks very much for the ideas!

I think you need to go through the
county courthouse, see when they bought land (if they did)
and also to look for wills. Those would be two different
deptments. Land records are in the Recorder's Office and
wills are in the Clerk's office. You might also try
looking for other marriage records for that family. I wish
we had gazzetters for then and other things as well. Sure
would be helpful. Also, in the clerk's office would be
civil court records which are public, to see if she was
placed in custody/or some kind of legal guardianship as a
minior maybe with this family, since you are not finding her
family directly here.
County Courthouse is located at 100 S. Main Street,
Winchester, IN 47394. You might call and see what they can
find first in order to know how much to send. They charge
$1 a copy.
I'm not sure who is in charge of the Recorder's Office, but
Claudia Thornburg is the current County Clerk.
Happy Hunting! Andrea
