Message Board Post:
My husband is a descendant of Jemima Kelly's husband, Jacob Kelly, through his first
wife, Margaret Gore. Jacob and Margaret had a son, James, who married Elizabeth Johnson.
James' son, Lewis Kelly, lived next to Jemima Kelly. I found a James Kelly on the 1830
and 1840 Randolph censuses with sons the right age of Lewis and his brother, Clark Kelly.
There were also daughters in the household. I wonder if Lydia might be a daughter of
James, and therefore a step-granddaughter of Jemima.
There is an unknown Nancy Kelly, age 19, living in the Walter and Priscilla Kelly Monks
h/h in 1850 who also fits the age of a daughter in James Kelly's h/h. Jacob and Jemima
Kelly had a daughter named Priscilla. Is she the one who m. Walter S. Monks?
James Kelly also left an orphaned son, Jacob, who lived in his brother Lewis's home in
1850. You might find this interesting: Family History Library Microfilm, 1666650. Randolph
Co. IN probate orders Book 3-5, 1843-1857, "On application of Clark Kelly...the sum
of twenty dollars for keeping Jacob Kelly, orphaned heir of James Kelly, deceased (between
the ages of 5-9 years of age), for clothing and __ for three years...court allows said
Clark the said sum of twenty dollars and ordered that James L. Addington his guardian pay
said Clark Kelley said sum of twenty dollars out of any money in his hands belonging to
said Jacob Kelly." Page 335, Jan term 1856.
Since Lydia was not named as an heir of Jacob in his will, I think it more likely that she
was a granddaughter. There are several grandchildren unaccounted for among Jacob's
older children, including children of our line, Thornton Kelly.
What are your thoughts about that possibility?
