Parents of Dexter D. Sickels
Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius & Sophia Sickles were the parents of Dexter D. Sickels. (Dexter
used the Sickels spelling and his parents used the Sickles spelling) The marriage of
Cornelius Sickles and Sophia Nickum is recorded in the Henry Co. courthouse in New Castle,
IN. They were married on Aug 6, 1854 by Thomas Hodson, J.P.
In Aug 1872, Cornelius Sickles filed for a divorce from Sophia L. Sickles in Delaware Co.,
IN court. She did not appear for the Oct. 1872, hearing. In Oct 1873, Cornelius filed for
divorce again with the hearing set for 1st Monday in Feb 1874. There is no record of a
final divorce.
The death record of Cornelius is in Delaware Co, IN and occured on Mar 4, 1882 in Harrison
Twp. He is buried in the Bethel Cemetery which is about 6 or 7 miles NW of Muncie on the
Bethel Pike. There is a stone marker with his name and the number ofan Ind Reg on it. (I
think it's 77th)
Sophia Sickles' obituary is in a Winchester newspaper dated Mar 26, 1914. She is
listed as 88 years old and died at her home in Dalton, Wayne Co., IN. Survivors listed
were 2 sons and 1 daughter: "Deck Sickles of Lynn, Peter of Dalton, and Mrs. Anna
Phillips of Losantville". The funeral was in the Nettle Creek Friends Church, which
is near Dalton, and the burial in the adjoining cemetery. There is no marker for her
grave.
