This appears to be information I posted 11 years ago. I have a copy of the entire article
and the excerpt from the 1906 biography of Nathan Spray was the only reference to the Jay
family in that article. I want to point out that although the biography references a
connection between William Jay (1711) to the Chief Justice John Jay, DNA has recently
confirmed this is not the case. For anyone interested in the Jay family, I would refer
them to the Jay Family Association website.
http://www.jayfamily.org/ Here you can find
wonderful article on the Jay DNA study, an article written on the Jay Family Index
(including how it was compiled and where the information came from), and an article on
William Jay of Frederick County VA which I had the privilege of co-authoring with Vince
King in 2007.
Respectfully submitted,
Christy Jay

"Yesterday at the Iowa Gen. Lib. I ran across a biography of a Nathan Byron
Spray. Nathan was the son of Mary Hunt Jay, oldest child of Dempsey Jay and
Clarkey Hunt. For those not familiar with this line it is as follows:
Mary Jay/William Spray
Dempsey Jay/Clarkey Hunt
James Jay/Jemima Mills
William Jay, Jr./Elizabeth
William Jay/Mary Vestal
We all know that county histories can be far from accurate; however, the only
date I found in conflict with my sources was the death year for Dempsey Jay -
(month and day are correct, but Dempsey signed a land deed in 1852 so 1850 is
probably not correct - more likely the 1855 year as indicated in the JFI).
The probate records for Clarkey Hunt Jay (1858) indicate that Mary Jay Spray
received the family Bible. "
"Biographical Review of Henry County, Iowa Containing Biographical and
Genealogical Sketches of Many of the Prominent Citizens of To-Day and Also of
the Past" (Hobart Publishing Company, Chicago, 1906), p. 496:
Nathan Byron Spray, one of the prosperous and enterprising farmers of the
county, living in Marion township, was born in Salem township on the 10th of
January, 1856, his parents being William and Mary H. (Jay) Spray. Mary H.
Jay was born in Indiana, January 9, 1828, came to Iowa with her parents in
1839, and was married to William F. Spray in 1852. She was a daughter of
Dempsey and Clarkey (Hunt) Jay. He was born November 2, 1802, died September
10, 1850, married Clarkey Hunt in Indiana. He was a son of James Jay, born
October 25, 1766; married Jemima Mills April 7, 1791, at Brush (sic) River
meeting, South Carolina. James Jay was a son of William and Elizabeth Jay.
He was the son of William and Mary Jay, the first of family definitely known.
They lived near Winchester, Frederick county, Virginia. It, however, is
known that Judge Jay, who signed the Declaration of Independence, is closely
connected with the family. Both the paternal and maternal grandparents were
residents of the Carolinas, whence they removed to Indiana at an early period
in the development of that state. . . ."
