I did a search on Ancestry, found a possible family in 1850 of a likely widow living in
Indiana, Kosciusko County, Prairie Township Family 102.
Mary Carmain age 43 born in Del.
Alfred Carmain age 17 born in OH, farming.
Elizabeth Carmain age 15 born in IN.
Malica? age 8 born in IN.
Noah age 6 born in IN.
John age 3 born in IN.
Seeing there is no adult male as head of house hold, you can think that she's a widow.
So I checked the Union City Cemetery for any Carmain and did not find any. But the city
and the cemetery were quite young then, bearly there so not to surprised to not find
anything. There were smaller church based communities in the area like New Lisbon and
South Salem. South Salem doesn't have a cemetery but the (Peter) Hoover Cemetery is
near by. I looked through what records I have for both of those cemeteries and did not
find a Carmain. There is also The Brick Memorial Cemetery (Church of the Brethren) and
St. Mary's (Catholic) near by, but I don't have records for them. There are no
local newspapers from that time period available to me for searching. The only thing I
can think to do for you is going to the courthouse and search for land deeds and for any
probate/will. There would not be any birth records or death records, those do not start
until 1882 in Indiana. Church re!
cords would be of some help, but I don't have access to all denominations here.
Have you found a death record for John? It should list his parents on it if the death
informat knew. I think finding that will the key to opening up a lot to you.
I will go to the courthouse next week and look.
Andrea
