Is this a series of articles? My family homestead was in the family from 1855 till now as
far as I know. The part where the original cabin and then Big House stood was in the
family from 1855 to the late 1970's sometime. It is the Daniel Moore farm in White
River Twp. I just wondered if there was a write-up about it. The other side of my family
was also a longtime land-holder in RCI.....the Harrises who came in 1831 to the Modoc
area.

Subject: [INRANDOL] 1947 Botkin Article
Union City Times-Gazette, Thursday, April 10, 1947
Fifth Generation On Botkin Farm
Another Randolph county farm in the same family 100 years or more has
been reported to the Winchester News and Journel-Herald. Other than
that, title has rested in the same name – Botkin.
Now owned by J. W. (Billy) Botkin, former county commissioner, and his
son, William E., it was entered in 1817 and has been occupied by direct
descendants of Hugh Botkin, J. W.'s grandfather, since that time.
The original owner came from Knox county, Tenn., in 1816 and made entry
with the Cincinnati land office in the spring of 1817. In those days
homesteading certificates of entry were held by the owners and upon full
payment deeds were issued.
Proof that the farm ownership is of direct lineal descent, are two
valuable documents - “sheepskin” deeds – issued to Hugh Botkin, both
signed by President Andrew Jackson. They are in possession of J. W.
Botkin who keeps them in his bank safety deposit box.
Strangely, the two deeds were for two separate tracts, adjoining each
other but in two different counties.
It came about in this manner:
Certificate No. 2543 was issued to Hugh Botkin of Wayne county on
October 20, 1830 for 80.26 acres.
Certificate No. 2408 was issued to Hugh Botkin of Randolph county on May
27, 1833 for 80.24 acres.
In the process of progress and settlement, Randolph became a unit of its
own and the Wayne county tract became a part of Randolph and still is –
located just south of state road 36, two and one-half miles north of the
Wayne county line.
Acreage now, however, consists of 240 acres.
To make the deeds to the presidential grants more official and a matter
of local record, they were recorded in Winchester on March 13, 1916 when
Jesse W. Yost was recorder and Charles E. Tillson was auditor.
But back to the lineal descent;
Hugh Botkin, the original owner, died in 1836 at the age of 60. His
wife, considerably younger, lived on the home farm and rearing her
family of 13 children.
William M. Botkin, Hugh's son and father of J. W., was born on this farm
July 17, 1823. Never having an established home elsewhere, he began to
buy out the heirs, later moving on the farm where he lived practically
all his life. He died in 1906.
J. W. was born on this same farm in 1878 and when July rolls around he
will have lived there 69 years.
J. W.'s son, William, was born there in 1915 and is operator and part
owner of the 240-acre farm. Mr. and Mrs. Botkin are also the parents of
five daughters.
