It is unfortunate that he passed away the year before the 1900 census, that
would of given a lot of interesting info on them.
Trying to remember if I have obits on file here on that year...but that
would not likely give you the marriage date, they did sometimes, but not
very often. I'll look.
Since you have two marriages and the first is unknown, I would start here in
Randolph County for that second marriage. Since you have a date, you can
contact the Clerk's office to see if it happened here in Randolph County.
Some of the records for marriage are very through, but the early years were
not. There were also marriage bonds, where a third party would vouch for
the bride and groom being able to marry. This second marriage might fall
into that time frame, but you won't get to much genealogy info from them.
Originals are at the Clerk's office. The marriage books are indexed in the
books but they have missed a few when doing that so if you have an idea of
the year for the first marriage I would carefully search that whole book if
the name is not in the index. I had found a Harlan marriage licenses in the
newspaper and went to the Clerk's office to get it and it was not in the
index, but I did find it where it was suppose to be in the book anyway. I
have not been in the new annex offices of the courthouse, but I do know that
when they moved everything over for the renovations to start they did a
thorough account of everything and know where it is now in the new annex.
So take heart that you might find something when it was lost before :)
Do you have any idea of who the first wife would be? Finding her marriage
may be a very small arrow in a large dark woods! Have you been able to
trace him through the census at all? Lot of distance to cover between
Montgomery Co OH and Randolph Co IN.
I would assume that Mary would be buried with her first husband if he was
here in Randolph County. Wondering where Daniel would be buried at,
Fountain Park? I don't have that year for burials for that cemetery, but
you can call the cemetery and ask them to look for you in the first day
book.
As far as obits and such, if I don't have anything here, you can contact the
Winchester Library to do a lookup or the Indiana State Library. I think
that particular year there were at least two newspapers in Winchester, plus
several others in the county. I would also check the Randolph County
Enterprise which started in Farmland and then moved to Ridgeville and
eventually was renamed. I would also check the Union City Times and Evening
Times. All of these newspapers covered more than just their cities
respectively as far as obits. The Winchester Library also has a collection
of local marriages in index, so again you can request a research there.
