That is the Old Winchester Cemetery which was first used in the 1840s, it was abandoned by
the city for use in the 1880's from what I was told. I was there last week to take
pictures. It is very bad shape, only a few out of hundreds of stones that should of been
there are visiable to me. Sharon Smith, the new treasure for the Randolph County
Historical Society along with Bobby Manning are heading a committee to clean it up and
hopefully do some restoration work there, what will be done will be determined by what can
be raised in funds to do so. I am hoping Sharon will be giving me somethings to make a
page for this project on my web-site. She played in that cemetery back in the 50s and
said at the time that it was over her head in weeds, no one knew how big it was or how
many people were buried there for a long time. The cemetery has been imortaizied in a way
in the movie...Now and Then (1995). If you watch it you will see little bits of
Winchester in it, and a fictio!
n story
about one of the stones there at the cemetery. That stone is still there but is needing
reset.
The cemetery is in Winchester and is on the north side of the parking lot of the National
Guard Armory, near the intersections of Huntsville Rd and Western Ave.
If you would like to know more about the project, you can e-mail me and I will forward
them to Sharon to respond to. Andrea Long

I wanted to inquire about a cemetery in Winchester. The location being east
Franklin Street on the South side of the street about 3 or 4 blocks from
"downtown" it was fully covered with overgrowth in the 1950s. What is the name
of
it? There was an alley way on the East side of the property.
