Hello All,
I ran into this rather interesting article in
the July 2, 1934 issue of the Union City Evening
Times. Being from Union City, I found some very
familiar names in the lists of the Vermin and
the Pests.
GRAND TOTAL
THE BIG PEST-KILLING CONTEST
CLOSES WITH A RECORD ON 1029 CROWS
-----------------------------
CEPHAS PORTER OF JACKSON I
WINS THE HIGH HONORS
WITH 249
Ten hundred and twenty-nine crows bit
the dust in the crow and hawk killing contest.
With Cephas Porter on the "Pests" winning the
grand prize. The "Vermin" taking the contest
by 63 points. Final score, Vermin 632, Pests
569.
Total number of pests brought in during
this contest: Hawks 32, crows 1029, crow eggs
40, rats 71, ground hogs 38, weasels 1, sparrows,
starling and blackbirds 98. No doubt hundreds of
others were hit hard enough to cause their death.
It is hoped that through this contest the
members have become educated to the damage done
by these pests to crops, poultry and wild game and
that they will continue to kill them whenever possible.
Following is the list if "Vermin" that killed
crows and hawks during this contest.

Cephas Porter, of near Jackson, Ind. school,
proved himself the King Crow Killer, with a record
of 249 with Dr. Voisinet second with a record of 163.
Cephas therefore wins the fine rifle which was
the prize put up for the individual winner of this
contest. This rifle was donated by Dr. Voisinet.
There was also a second prize, consisting of two
cases of coca cola, donated by Orlando Jefferis.
In addition to the above a box of shot gun
shells was given each week to the man on each side
who killed the most pests. Altogether fourteen boxes
of shells were given out, donated by Charles Simmons
hardware store and the league.
As a grand finale to this great campaign against
the enemies of the small game and song birds, the
losers will throw a big banquet for the winners, time
and place to be announced later.
Calvin Malloon is the chairman of the contest.
Dr. Davis was the captain of the Vermin and L. Summers
was captain of the Pests.
So the big contest for the launching of which
Walter Hueber was largely responsible, has closed, but
the killing of pests will go on and on. As a fact this
contest has brought out the fact that hunting and killing
hawks and crows especially, is more sport than killing of
game birds. For one thing the killers are harder to bag
and then when a hunter has made a killing he can feel that
he has accomplished a good deed. On with the dance of
death for the destroyers of our game, song birds and chicks.
Take Care,
--Jane
