Subject: [INROOTS] IHS 82nd Annual History Conference featuring Willard
Heiss Memorial Lecture
With the 200th anniversary of the departure of Lewis and Clark drawing
near, the Indiana Historical Society will host its 82nd annual history
conference "Exploration and Discovery," on Saturday, November 2, at its
headquarters, 450 W. Ohio Street, Indianapolis. The conference will
feature a variety of lectures covering aspects of the Lewis and Clark
expedition and the settling of the Old Northwest and Indiana.
Gary E. Moulton, professor of history at the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln and editor of _The Journals of the Lewis and Clark
Expedition_, will give the keynote address, "The Seven Habits of Some
Highly Effective Explorers." He also will present a session on "Editing
the Journals of Lewis and Clark."
A special feature at this year's all-day conference will be first-person
interpretations of Thomas Jefferson and William Clark performed by
Patrick Lee. During the conference Lee will portray Jefferson as he
prepared the country for the Lewis and Clark expedition. As Clark, Lee
will revisit the explorer's time with the expedition and discuss his
role in Missouri's advancement to a territory and then a state.
This year's Willard Heiss Memorial Lecture, for family history
researchers, is noted Old Northwest and pioneer-era genealogy researcher
Lloyd D. Bockstruck of the Dallas Public Library. He will present two
sessions at the conference, "The Old Northwest" and "Migrations across
the United States to the Mississippi." The conference also will include
sessions on period maps, women in the westward movement and frontier
Indiana.
Full registration for the conference, including lunch, is $37; $32 for
IHS members; $22 for students 18 or younger. The cost to attend
conference sessions only is $25; $20 for IHS members; $10 for students.
Seating is limited and early registration before October 18 is
encouraged. To register call (317) 233-5659 or you can download the
conference brochure at
