Surname: WYSONG
-------------------------
WYSONGs are generally accepted as descended from Ludwig WYSONG/WEISSANG,
b 1678, d. 1784, m. Mary HAMMER.
Extracted from "The Fincastle Herald" of 21 Sept 1978:
A memorial park in honor of Ludwig Wysong is located at the intersection
of US 220 and Main St. in Fincastle, Botentourt Co, Va. The Ludwig Wysong
Memorial Park contains the blacksmith shop that was operated there by one
of Ludwig's sons in the 1700's. The remains of the blacksmith shop have
been restored and it, together with the large piece of ground upon which
it sets, was donated to Historic Fincastle, Inc.
The family name has been traced back to France in 1558, when an early family
member then named Vincent fled to the Rhineland area of Germany because
of religious persecution. There the German pronunciation of the name corrupted
to the "Weissanz" which later became Wysong.
Ludwig Wysong is believed to have moved to Wales, England, where he entered
the English King's service, landing in America in 1715. He located in York
Co, Pa, where he married at the age of 60. He had eleven children, seven
of them boys. Five of his sons were veterans of the American Revolution
-- Johan Lewis, Joseph, Valentine, Feidt, and Jacob. Two of them, Feidt
and Valentine, settled in Fincastle.
