Ted,
Henry Shanks filed for divorce in January 1882 in Randolph County. On the
1880 census Henry and Mary Catherine are living in separate households.
I have copies of some of the divorce papers on the Randolph County site.

An Adams cousin of mine who has been working on the family tree for a
several years found Henry Shanks listed on the 1900 Farmland census. So we
knew he did not die.
Another little interesting note, when I went to get a copy of Edward Adams
marriage certificates. The one for him and Mary Catherine had "Do Not
Publish" hand written on the top of it.
Edward's brother Nathan Adams married Mary Catherine and Henry Shanks
daughter Ella. And the same "Do Not Publish" was written on their
certificate also.
Copies of their marriage certificates are online at the following link.

Do you happen to know the date and county in which the divorce
occurred?
