Firefox, Netscape and Internet Explorer bookmarks or favorites all have
export capability. It is usually on the file menu from the "Manage
Bookmarks" area. I was once told that storing things on the desktop is not
good for long term storage, not sure why, but I usually use it only for
short term storage.
It's a good idea to store your genealogy not only on zip or disc, but also
to have an "off-site" storage for it in case of fire, hurricane, tornado,
etc. When you backup your file, save an extra copy to something portable,
give it to someone. Next time you backup, do it again, retrieve the original
from whoever, give them the new one. At least that way you only lose the
material you entered between backups.
I learned the hard way to scan my file for errors before backing it up, too.
I now "check/repair" my file each time I work on it and back it up before
closing it for the day.
