Joanne,
If your Coats were Quakers (and many were) it would be really helpful to locate through
microfilm or library holdings Abstracts of the Records of the Society of Friends in
Indiana by Willard Heiss. These records will give you tons of information.
I have some of these but since Coats is not my lineage didn't find much on that as I
am looking at just segments I have in my files. I did, however, find in the New Garden
meeting (PA) under the surname Cook the listings below. Don't know if they are your
Rachel or not.
4-17-1852
Rachel (form Crampton) rpt mcd
This means that she was originally a Crampton, married a Cook and is now reported to be
married again. The mcd means that she married a Quaker but that they were married outside
the monthly meeting. (not uncommon)
6-19-1852
Rachel (form Crampton) con mcd
This means that she "confessed" her error in marrying outside of the meeting and
is accepted back in.
5-21-1853
Rachel & ch, Ruthanna, gct Whitewater MM
This means that a Rachel Cook and child received a certificate to move to the Whitewater
MM in Indiana. This may or may not be the same Rachel as above but I would not be
surprised if it is and it could bear checking out further.
Not sure where you are located but if you have a large genealogy library close by or a
fairly large LDS Family History center the Heiss books are most likely there. If not, they
are available on microfilm from the LDS library in Salt Lake City. Most areas have at
least a small Family History center somewhere close and they can be ordered through that
center.
Hope this helps a little.
