Andrea, The best way to determine if you ancestor filed for a pension is to search a
pension index. If you have access to
Ancestry.com there is one entitled Civil War Pension
Index: General Index To Pension Files. If you don't have access to
Ancestry.com let
me know. I live just outside of Washington, DC so I have easy access to the National
Archives. Once you verify there was a pension granted then you can request a copy from
the National Archives since it is a federal record. Indiana has a substitute for the 1890
Census of Veterans and Widows. It is called Enrollment of Soldiers, Widows, and Orphans.
Here is a description of it from the Indiana State Archives Website: The primary resource
is the Enrollment of Soldiers, Widows and Orphans, three statewide registrations of
veterans and their survivors taken in 1886, 1890 and 1894. Each enrollment lists
alphabetically the name of the veteran, unit he served in, war he fought in (Mexican or
Civil), number of children under 16, and wounds and illness contracted in service. There
is an alphabetical card index to the 1886 enrollment available at the State Library, but
the records can be searched at the State Archives by county and township. Tony

Question> > I have a question that someone might be able to help me with. One of my
gg> grandfathers was in the civil war, he was enlisted in OH, and lived in OH at>
the time. Sometime after the 1870 census, he and family moved to Huntington> Co, IN. He
died before the 1880 census in Huntington Co. I have a death> date from a one line obit
in the newspaper, but no idea of where he is> buried at, or when his wife died. Still
looking! I know that there are no> census records for 1890 for Indiana, and the 1890
census for veterans and> their widows was also lost to us for Indiana. So here is my
question. If> she applied for his war pension, would I find records in the Indiana
State> Library or do I need to seek info in Ohio? Andrea Long> >
