Rainy Weather Cuts Attendance At Annual Wayne School Reunion
A fair sized crown attended the reunion of Wayne township schools in
the Grimes grove west of the city Sunday afternoon. Pleasing oldtime
music was provided by James Dempsey and J. B. Mason, violins, and Mrs.
Alva Wolfe, piano. Letters were read from Judge A. S. Peacock, of
Wakeeney, Kan.; Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Harshman of Glendale, Calif. Cards
of regret for inability to attend were read from W. W. Fowler of this
city and Clarence Higi of Muncie, Ind.
Rev. J. Floyd Seelig of this city gave a short address in which he
reviewed some of his early days at Lynn, Ind., and paid a tribute to W.
E. Wright, a former teacher there. He stressed the necessity of more
character education in these days, saying that mind without character
is only a menace to society. The Rev. E. J. Wickersham of Portland,
Ind., spoke briefly, saying that real life includes struggle and
sacrifice. "When we begin to be in want we begin to grow," he
declared. He praised the reunion idea and the value of reunions to
people. Henry J. Wickersham, 83, of Muncie, spoke briefly about Judge
Peacock, a former schoolmate. Rain at 3:30 cut off the remainder of
the afternoon's program.
The oldest person present was Howard Hart, 85, of south of this
city.. Miss Frances Peacock, teacher in Camden, S. C., had come the
longest distance, 1,000 miles. Mrs. Pearl Clevenger, of Shiloh, O., had
come 150 miles. Tributes were paid to deceased reunion members during
the past year which included Jacob Conklin, John W. Morton, Mrs. Lizzie
Ingle Smith, James B. Arthur, Mr. and Mrs. Marion Ohler, Mr. and Mrs.
Edgar Woodbury, Mrs. Howard Hart, Mrs. Ella S. Ward, Mrs. Alice Fraze,
A. T. Shockeny, Forrest Sullenberger, Mrs. Elizabeth Stoneman, W. O.
Stuckey, William Bruss.
The following officers and committees were elected when the report of
the nominating committee composed of Frank Potts, George W. Harter and
J. E. Conklin, was approved; Don C. Ward, president; Harry Peacock,
vice-president; Clyde Shultz, secretary-treasurer; arrangements
committee, S. H. Weslin, Noah Onkst, Harry Robinson, E. L. Conklin, Ray
Harshman; program committee, F. M. Potts, Agnes Carpenter, Myrtle
Williamson, Fern Wasson, Frank Conklin; invitations committee, Mrs.
Anna Shultz, E. O. Coates, Rev. S. F. Harter, Mrs. Alva Wolfe, Mrs. Dan
Cotter.
Other attendants from a distance included the following: Edward
Martin, of Dayton, O.; Mrs. Ella Robbins and Mrs. Delta Roberts, of
Marion, Ind.; Mrs. Alice Langen, W. D. Shultz, H. J. Wickersham, of
Muncie; Lon Kemp, of Galion, O.; Mr. and Mrs. John Ridenbaugh, of
Alexandria, Ind.; Mr. and Mrs. George Tibbot and family, Richmond, Ind.;
Rev. and Mrs. E. J. Wickersham, of Portland, Ind.; Harmon Wigger and
Miss Wigger, of Anderson, Ind. In addition to these there were many in
attendance from Winchester, Ind., Modoc, Ind., Lynn, Ind., Ansonia, O.,
and other places.
