Jane Torres asked me to pass along this message today:
Hello,
Many of you are familiar with Billy Baker and the help that he has
provided for us on many, many occasions. He has now really outdone
himself with his latest project! Billy has typed five full years of
obituaries from the Union City Evening News, which in 1939 became the
Union City Times-Gazette. The obituaries cover 1936-1940. When I put
his original file into Word, if printed it would have been about 550
pages!
We have indexed the files alphabetically by the decedent's surname and
linked the index to the appropriate obituary but I STRONGLY suggest
using the Find feature on your browser once you are on an obituary page.
There are hundreds of surnames mentioned in the body of the obituaries
that are not evident in the index.
The obituaries cover not only the Union City area but much of Randolph
County as well as Darke County, Ohio and are often even further reaching
into other states. I believe that this will be an excellent resource to
all area researchers.
The direct URL to the Informational page is:
http://www.dcoweb.org/randolph/UCobits/index.html
Presently the best way to search the obits is through the
DCOWeb.org
search engine on the
www.dcoweb.org home page. This is a simple search
engine so please use one word searches. Take the link at the top of the
obituary pages to the Informational page, if you have not already done
so - this page also contains the links to the yearly indexes. And, as I
said above, once on the actual obit pages, use your Find feature.
Many, Many Thanks to Billy and Enjoy!
Jane Torres
