There seems to be some dispute as to whether Anthony Chamness's mother
was Ann Jones or Ann Weary.
I have a copy of a message posted to CHAMNESS-L(a)rootsweb.com mailing
list from David Chamness RE: "Church records of John and Ann (Weary)
Chamness & son Anthony", dated 7 Jan 2003. It says:
"In 1974, Ronald E. Chamness was visiting London and engaged a genealogist,
Mr. Ringrose, to research records. At St Johns of Wapping in the London
Borough of Tower Hamlets he found at St. Peters Church, the records of the
older St. John's Church, showing the marriage of Ann Weary to John Chamniss.
Attached are scans of transcriptions of the Baptism Certificate for Anthony
Chamness (Chamniss) and the Marriage Record of his parents, John and Ann
(Weary) Chamniss. These were taken from the records of the parish church of
St. John of Wapping, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, which were
reportedly found among the records of St. Peter's Church. Copies were
forwarded to me courtesy of Dan Chamness of Texas."
"Anthony was baptised on Mar 7, age 18 days. The year is listed as
1713/14. At that time the New Year started in March, not January, so dates
between Jan and Mar were "double-dated" with both the old and new year. This
system changed in 1752. In the Quaker records Anthony gave his birthdate as
"2nd Month (Feb) 1713, using the new style of dating. Therefore I think his
correct birthdate 12 17 Feb 1712/13. Perhaps someday a review of the
original parish trecords will clarify this. (If Anthony was actually born in
Feb 1714, he would have been only 11 years old when he was indentured to
come to America."
Attached is a xeroxed copy of the "Marriage Certificate dated January 4,
1704/5 between John Chamniss and Ann Weary, bachelor and spinster, of this
parish". Also there is a copy of Anthony's Baptism Certificate at age 18
Days naming both his parents as above. Both Certificates were from the
Parish of St. John of Wapping, in the diocese of London.
