JAMES W. MARKWELL ANSWERS THE CALL
Mr. James W. MARKWELL pioneer citizen of this place passed away Tuesday
morning after an illness of several weeks which became serious only a few
days before the death messenger arrived.
Mr. MARKWELL was a man of many sterling virtnes and those fortunate enough
to have enjoyed an intimate acquaintance with him will grieve in the passing
of a splendid character. He was typical of the sturdy, hard working, thrifty
stock which Indiana and the west tried and proved true in the days when
to survive here was sufficient evidence of ones manhood and courage to
be received by any court.
Mr. MARKWELL was born in Randolph County, Indiana June 11, 1844, and at
the age of 11 moved with his parents to an Iowa farm. In 1866 he was united
in marriage with Miss Eliza INGRAM and to this union there came one daughter,
Carrie, in 1867. In 1883 the family came to this state and the daughter
became Mrs. James CAMPBELL. She with her highly esteemed husband and her
maother have passed on to prepare the way for the coming of the father.
After the death of his first wife, Mr. MARKWELL took to himself Mrs. Nancy
A. WALTERS and she is left to mourn the departure of the kind and thoughtful
companion of her sunset years. Besides the widow Mr. MARKWELL is survived
by a sister, Mrs. Jenny BROWN and a brother, Mr. Benjamin MARKWELL of this
city and a brother, John of Ottumwa, Ia. Three grandchildren, Mrs. Maude
CAMPBELL HUGHES, Mr. Bruce CAMPBELL and Mr. Ralph CAMPBELL are others who
are near and intimate relatives of the departed.
The last services were held in this city Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist
church and the interment was in the local cemetery.
