Janet,
Some, or maybe a lot, of the people who were sent to the "insane asylum"
were actually suffering from dementia or Alzheimer's and were not "insane"
at all. We had that situation in our family here in Michigan where my 2nd
gr. grandfather suffered from dementia and was sent to the local County
Hospital which also housed an insane asylum.

Subject: [INRANDOL] Central State Hospital for the Insane
Central State Hospital was on West Washington Street (very near
Tibbs
Avenue) in Indianapolis. It has been closed now for several years - maybe
5
or 6. The buildings are still there. I'm not sure about a
cemetery on
the
premises but there is one just across Tibbs Avenue from the side of
the
hospital grounds. I was told one time that patients were often buried in
Crown Hill Cemetery there in Indianapolis in "donated" graves by families
that were not going to use the graves in their plots. I don't know if
this
is true. However, I did find the grave of a brother to my Gr.
Grandfather
Morris Keister there on a family plot which I have not connected and an
older member of the family told me that the brother (Esebeous Keister)
died
in the "insane asylum" in Indianapolis. I don't know
who would have the
State Hospital records or how you could find them. If anyone know - I'd
be
interested in the information.
