Message Board Post:
I am following John HARDESTY (b 20 Jan 1805 Columbiana OH, d 16 Aug 1878 Porter, IN);
spouse of Nancy (possibly RINGLE, b 1812, PA).
John arrived in Porter in the fall of 1847. He was Justice of the Peace and then County
Commissioner from 1855 to 1867.
Also residing in Porter were HARDESTY/RINGLE children:
Hardesty, Harmon (M MILNER)
Hardesty, Loisa
Hardesty, Susanna (died young)
Hardesty, David (my line)
Hardesty, Mary
Hardesty, George
Hardesty, Hannah
Hardesty, Sarah Adaline
Hardesty, Amelia Nancy (b Porter, m SWARTZ 1870 Porter)
Hardesty, Solana (b Porter, IN)
Son David HARDESTY (b 8 Dec 1836 OH, d 15 Sep 1903) married Mary Jane WALTON (b 28 April
1841 IN, d 5 Mar 1899 OK) on 30 Oct 1859 in Porter. David farmed in Porter through 1871 at
least. By 1875 he is in Lincoln KS.
Also born in Porter were other HARDESTY/WALTON children:
Ida A. (b 1860 Porter, m Frank JONES)
Oliver (Olly, O. E.) Ellsworth HARDESTY (b 1867 Porter, m May HYDE, d 1943 OK)
and likely John O. HARDESTY (b 1871 IN)
I have John as the son of William HARDESTY (b 1776 MD, d 1836 Carroll OH) and Louisa
KNAUFF or KNOUF (b 1782 Frederick MD, D 1859 Carroll OH). Another son, Isaac HARDESTY (b
1822 OH, m SHOLL d 1897 Porter) co-located with brother John in Porter. Daughter Drucilla
(b 1824 OH, m Aaron GEARHART 1842, d 1899, buried in Porter) may also provide leads on
their parents.
Would appreciate anything - particularly sources - on John, David or O. E. HARDESTY and
their spouses ... or any corrctions. Obits from siblings like Isaac have been very
helpful.
As John HARDESTY was Porter County Commissioner at the outbreak of the Civil War, he must
have left a paper trail.
