During the past year, the content listed below has been added to the
Porter County GenWeb site at
www.inportercounty.org. The website is fully
searchable (see right column under menu) and free to all users. Donations
of content and images to the website is encouraged and always welcome.
New Content:
* Added 2,008 aerial images from John Drury's book "This Is Porter
County." These images include black and white aerial views of homesteads
from all 12 Porter County townships.
* Complete scans of high school annuals for Valparaiso High School for the
years of 1907, 1909, 1911, 1920, and 1923. Each annual is searchable using
Adobe Acrobat Reader's pdf search feature.
* List of Crisman High School Alumni (Portage Township) from 1918 through
1930.
* Valparaiso and county directories for 1885, 1893, and 1902. Each
directory is searchable using Adobe Acrobat REader's pdf search feature.
* Military service information of Porter County residents involved in the
following wars: American Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Black Hawk War,
Seminole War, Mexican-American War, American Civil War, Spanish-American
War, Mexican Expedition (Pancho Villa), World War I, World War II, Korean
War, Vietnam War, Beirut Barracks Bombing, and the Iraq War/Occupation of
Iraq.
* Added 1,103 records from the Hardesty List of Porter County Civil War
Soldiers.
* Added a Brief History of Porter County in the Civil War.
* Transcription of the August 18, 1936, edition of The Vidette-Messenger.
This edition included the Porter County Centennial, 1836-1936, Special
Edition, a 94-page compendium of Porter County history that included 174
articles. There is a huge amount of genealogical and historical
information contained in these articles.
* Added 1956 History of Porter County by John Drury.
* Added 1876 History of Porter County written by A. G. Hardesty.
* Added 1878 "History of Porter County" written by Hubert M. Skinner.
* Posted the book "Pioneer Life and Impressions" written by Mrs. Isabel
McKnight, circa 1917, discussing various people and places in Porter
County.
* Added 1923 History of Porter County written by Deborah H. Shults-Gay.
* Posted a brief history of the Porter County school system, written in
1917 by Fred H. Cole, Superintendent of Porter County Schools.
* Posted an article published in 1919 titled "Fishing in a Mid-West
College Town."
* Added an additional 175 images and photographs of Porter County places.
The total number of Porter County images and photographs available on the
website is now approaching 4,500.
* Added a link to the Porter County GIS webpage. This mapping service is
provided to the general public by the Porter County GIS Office, a unit of
the Porter County Auditor's Department.
* Added railroad right-of-way plat maps for Porter County. These maps
provide original railroad/property owner deed information when each
railroad was constructed across the county.
* Added a complete transcription of a Vidette-Messenger newspaper article
concerning the memories of Broncho John H. Sullivan published in 1935.
* Added a complete transcription of a book written in 1896 by Broncho John
H. Sullivan, one of Valparaiso's most colorful citizens, titled "Life and
Adventures of Broncho John: His First Trip Up the Trail."
* Added indexes for the Eight Square Cemetery in Pine Township and the
Salem/Friedhoff Cemetery in Washington Township.
* Added indexes to all Liberty Township cemeteries.
* Added more than 300 fully transcribed, cited, and indexed biographies.
Four of the five major biographical books (often referred to as "mug
books") concerning Porter County citizens have now been transcribed and
posted to the website. We are in the process of transcribing biographies
from the final book (from the 1912 History of Porter County) and hope to
have that project completed by January 1, 2010.
* Added contemporary newspaper articles concerning the Woodville Train
Wreck of 1906 that killed between 55 and 61 individuals.
* Added an article to website titled "Dream Cities of The Calumet" written
by John O. Bowers and published in 1929.
* Added an essay to the website titled "Villages and Towns of Porter"
written by Timothy H. Ball and published in 1900.
* Numerous surnames have been added to the surname list.
