Silas T. Mason
Dies Aged 79
Porter County Native
Succumbs At Osceola
Early This Morning
Silas T. Mason, 79, & native of
Porter county, who was well known
to many people here, died at 2:30
this morning at Osceola, Ind. He
has been in failing health for the
past seven or eight months.
He was born in Hebron on Jan.
6, 1867, the son of the late Thomas
Mansfield Mason and Lydia
Ann (Fleming) Mason. The elder
Mason at one time conducted a
livery stable in Kouts.
Silas Mason traveled through
much of the country, but always
maintained his home In porter
county. For the past 25 years he
has owned considerable property
in north Valparaiso.
For a time he maintained a mo-
ving business in Boston and Pasa-
dena, Calif., and had an inter-
est in some orange groves in Cali-
fornia.
Wife, Son Survive
He is survived by his wife Thora,
a native of Sweden, who was with
him in Osceola when he died.
There were five children, only one
of whom, Thomas John, of Chicago,
survives. The son is married and
lives with his wife, Ruth Elizabeth,
and their two children, Linda
Ruth and Elizabeth Ann.
One brother survives. He is
Fred M., of Portland, Oregon.
Four brothers died. They were
John, Dwight, Robert and Thomas.
The latter was formerly a profes-
sor of mathematics at Purdue uni-
versity.
Funeral services will be held
Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the
LePell funeral home, with the Rev.
Stanley L. Shippey officiating.
Burial will be in Fleming ceme-
tery.
