Steve, I know that info was for the lady looking to identify the picture she had, but
thanks for sharing that, it was interesting.

There were two Central Hotels listed in the Porter County Directory published in
1902. The New Central Hotel was owned and operated by C. R. Barnhart and his
wife Marie E. Barnhart and was located at the corner of Main Street (today's
Lincolnway Avenue) and Lafayette Street. The Grand Central Hotel was located at
23 West Main Street, which is present day 23 West Lincolnway Avenue. The owner
and operator of the Grand Central Hotel was Ed. A. Mee.
Neither Imperial Art Studio nor A. E. Hayes is listed in the 1902 Porter County
Directory or in the 1893 Valparaiso City Directory.
The Imperial is listed in the 1885 Valparaiso City Directory at the top of pages
61, 71, 77, and 89: "THE BEST PLACE IN THE CITY IS at the 'IMPERIAL,' 21 W.
Main." A. O. Hayes, however, is not listed in the 1885 Valparaiso City
Directory. Given the address of the Imperial, is must have been located next
door to the Grand Central Hotel. The Grand Central Hotel does appear in the 1896
Sanborn Fire Insurance Map - but no photography studio is shown to be adjacent
to the hotel. There is a "Sample Room" shown to be within the hotel, and this
may have possibly been the photography studio. The exact same information is
shown in the 1982 version of the Sanborn Fire Insurance Map for Valparaiso.
The only probable candidate as to whom A. E. Hayes may be given the 1880 and
1900 Federal Census enumerations for Porter County is a 1880 listing for an
Arthur Hayes, aged 15, working on farm and living in Center Township, Porter
County, Indiana - possibly the Hayes you're looking for, but unlikely.
It may be that A.E. Hayes was a student at the university and only operated his
studio in Valparaiso while attending the university. Upon graduation he may have
packed up and left the city.
I hope this information can assist you in your research.
